SMOKEY QUARTZ: The dark Samhain Crystal

The sky is rumbling, lightning sinks its roots into the midnight sky while the witches pot is bubbling. Summer has ceased to be. Long sunny days are clouded by the darkness of Autumn. No more beaches and sand between our toes, but moonlit walks amongst fallen leaves. Carve your pumpkins and charge your crystals. The darkness is near; Samhain is here.

Happy Halloween Wiccans! It’s that time of the year again, and it appears to me that as the years pass, this celebration seems like its becoming a personal favourite! But what is Samhain? And why do I associate Smokey Quartz to this feast? Let’s get to it!

What is Samhain?

Samhain is an ancient pagan celebration. To Wiccan's this is the new year, the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark and cold winter days, to back this up, the word Samhain means the end of summer. On Samhain (which is either the 30th of October or the 1st of November) the vail between our world and the spirit world is at its thinnest, meaning that it is easier to talk to and contact spirits. Some also say that during this time their loved deceased ones pay them visits. It is said to be the perfect night for divination.

Most of the feasts and celebrations that occur on the night are held in celebration in remembering those who have passed away, in fact here in Malta we celebrate the ‘Tal-Mejtin’ feast aka the day of the dead, and in Mexico they celebrate ‘Día de Muertos’ also meaning the day of the dead. But this isnt a day to be afraid of! Not all those spirits who wonder the world on this night mean to harm you, but there might be some who do, so thats why Smokey Quartz is my preferred crystal.

Why Smokey Quartz?

Smokey Quartz is a darker variety of Clear Quartz. This beautiful gemstone works as a sponge and absorbs any negative energies that surround you. Filtering all negativity and making sure you stay pure. Therefore it acts as a barrier on this evening against all negative spirits. But this isn’t just good to use and wear on Halloween…Smokey Quartz has other uses.

This beautiful gemstone is an amazing grounding stone. It helps get rid of fears and doubts making sure it keeps your anxieties on the low, all the while helping you find balance within you. For those aspiring witches and others who want to dive into witchcraft this dark crystal serves as an anchor to mother earth, which will allow you to connect to your ancient roots and find yourself. Smokey helps to lean people away from addictions aswell, giving them that extra push to take those steps and be free. Being such a negative abductor this means that it is important that you cleanse this crystal often…but how? Easy, charging it under moonlight is always effective, lighting up some sage and letting the smoke cover it is another good way, but a favourite of mine is placing it in soil for a couple of days to let it re charge itself with the personal aid of mother earth.
